As a small boy, Peter Silas disliked his name. He decided that Bob was a m uch
more fitting title. 'Some say that they had a mule named Bob, and it k icked
alot. Peter would get down in the floor and buck and kick, so they n icknamed
him Bob That is one theory' Soon everyone was using his new adopt ed title. As
years passed, even census takers listed, 'Robert', as younge st son of John L.
and Mary Peters.
Uncle 'Bob', was a blacksmith, and gunsmith by trade. He also repaired clo cks,
and watches. At one time he owned both a cotton gin and sawmil l. As a small
child I was facinated to watch him heat some heavy pie ce of iron, red hot, put
it on the anvil and hammer it into shape with a h eavy hammer. When I got older,
I was even more facinated to watch him do t hat, on hot summer days, take a drink
of fresh well water, never anythi ng stronger. Turn into his gun, clock, and
watch house, and start work imm ediately on a ladies watch. (Not sure who is
telling this story. Her dad w as Tom H. James. This was in Ethel Taylor's papers.)
For recreation, he cut maple trees, sawed them into boards to season. I do n't
know how he cut the pieces so thin, with no modern tools, but he di d, and soon
fashioned a fine fiddle. He also enjoyed playing his 'fiddle s' He played the
old 'hoe down' tunes, like 'Ole Dan Tucker', 'Turkey in t he Straw', and oodles
more.
My own family tradition states that my great-grandfather, Dolphin, was al so
a 'fiddle' player. Perhaps he learned from 'Uncle Bob' ( Per Ethel Tayl or?)
