Per West Virginia Place Names page 481.
West Virginia A Guide to the Mountain State page 338 explains that Petersb urg
was settled about 1745 by German colonists, and named for Jacob Peters on, who
opened the first general store. In 1833, when it obtained a post o ffice, its
name was changed to Lunice Creek, because there was already o ne Petersburg in
Virginia. After West Virginia attained statehood in 186 3, its original name
was restored.
My dad always said that our ancestors were from Germany. He also said th at there
was a town named after them. Per Cornelious Peters aka Junior, Ma rch 27, 2002.
I also understand that when some came from the old country, that they wou ld
drop off some of their name. Like Peterson, they would drop the on, a nd then
it would be Peters.
We have looked for a tie in back further than John L. Then we found Henr y. Now
just possibly we have found one further back than Henry. Don't disc ount it,
think about it.
Henry's son Aaron had a son born in 1848. He named him Jacob.
There was a land owner in 1789 named Jacob Peters. He owned 270 acre s. It was
in Militia Dist 13 Rockingham Co., VA. This is from VA valley re cords W358V2.
Some of the early records are in the Hardy County Court. Jacob PETERSON had
